Tenneco · Enron · UBS · Cogent Energy · Xpansiv — 30+ years of energy markets leadership
A career spanning the evolution of North American energy markets
Fletcher J. Sturm is a recognized authority in North American natural gas, electricity, and environmental commodity markets, with more than 30 years of leadership across every dimension of the energy value chain. A pioneer in physical and financial derivatives trading, he authored two editions of Trading Natural Gas: A Nontechnical Guide (PennWell Books, 1996 & 2020), widely regarded as the definitive introductory text on the North American natural gas market.
His career began at Tenneco Gas Marketing in 1991, where he trained as a fundamental analyst before moving into physical natural gas trading. At Enron, he rose to Vice President and Head of Basis Market Trading, executing the largest asset management transaction of its kind in 1997. In 1999, he transitioned to wholesale power trading, managing the Midwest and Southeast desks.
Retained by UBS in 2002 following the Enron bankruptcy, Fletcher was appointed Managing Director and charged with leading natural gas derivatives trading, which under his direction grew to record profitability. He later co-founded Cogent Energy Investment Management, which was named “Best Single Sector CTA” in 2015 and at its peak managed over $180 million in client assets.
In 2021, Fletcher joined Xpansiv as VP of Market Development in the Digital Fuels group, building products and creating the market for digital environmental attributes of natural gas.
Today, Fletcher leads Sturm Advisory Services LLC, providing strategic consulting, expert testimony, and advisory services across the energy and environmental commodity sectors. He is the creator of SASEA™, an AI-powered natural gas fundamental analytics platform featuring 9 integrated supply-demand models, 29 years of market history, and a self-healing data pipeline — built solo from the ground up.
